On Thursday, Liberal-Democrat MP and Business Secretary Vince Cable described the fall of Rupert Murdoch’s British media empire as “a bit like the end of a dictatorship.”
Seven months previous, two undercover reporters for the Murdoch-owned Daily Telegraph caught Cable on tape, boasting: “I have declared war on Mr Murdoch and I think we’re going to win.” As Business Secretary of the coalition government, he was in a position to block Murdoch’s erstwhile bid to purchase BSkyB, so naturally there was some handwringing from News Corp over his remark. To wit:
News Corp is shocked and dismayed by reports of Mr Cable’s comments. They raise serious question’s [sic] about fairness and due process.
I can’t help but enjoy revisiting that statement in the current context.
